The Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Gabal El-Tayr is located east of the Nile River in Minya Governorate, atop a rocky plateau overlooking one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Upper Egypt. The site is associated with the Coptic tradition that recounts the Holy Family’s passage through the area during their journey in Egypt. Over the centuries, it has become one of the most important spiritual pilgrimage sites. The site combines deep spiritual significance with a unique natural landscape, making it one of the most prominent and distinctive stops along the route.
It is considered one of the most important Holy Family pilgrimage sites in Egypt. It contains an ancient church carved into the mountain. In the fourth century, Queen Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, came to the area and ordered a church to be carved into the mountain. Inside the church is a rock column containing a stone baptismal font carved into the column. The site is also known as the Monastery of the Palm. According to tradition, while the boat carrying the Holy Family was sailing along the Nile directly beneath this location, a large rock rolled down from the top of the mountain and was about to fall onto the boat. However, the child Jesus extended his hand toward the rock and supported it, preventing it from falling. The imprint of his hand was left on the rock, which is why the site became known as the Monastery of the Palm. (This rock is reportedly located in an area in Britain, where it was taken during the British occupation of Egypt.)

Development Works
The project includes the construction of a four-star hotel, a cable car connecting the Nile bank to the mountain summit, and a marina for tourist boats, along with providing the necessary spaces for tourism projects and activities.
